On 19 and 20 October 2023 we hosted a two-day workshop for youths at the Federal University, Wukari. Titled “Promoting Peace Education Through Dialogue Among Youths”, it brought together students, faculty and special guests to discuss peacebuilding, conflict resolution and the role of young people in peaceful coexistence.
The workshop aimed to show participants how peace education prevents violence, builds mutual understanding and creates a culture of non-violence among youths. It was especially timely given rising tensions in parts of Nigeria, including Wukari and its environs.
Speakers included academics, peace activists and civil society representatives. Keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Bature, an expert in conflict management and peace studies, emphasised the role education plays in cultivating a culture of peace, and how dialogue can resolve conflicts peacefully.
In a panel discussion, students, lecturers and community leaders explored the role of youth in bridging cultural and religious divides. In hands-on sessions, students learned conflict mediation, active listening and negotiation — skills that equip them to serve as peace ambassadors on campus and in their communities.
